Show off your Culinary Skills at the Texas Onion Fest

If you enjoy cooking with onions or believe you make the best salsa in town, it’s time to create an original onion dish of your own and enter your recipe in the annual Onion and Salsa Recipe Contests at Weslaco’s Texas Onion Fest Culinary Center sponsored by American Electric Power.

For the first time in many years, the contest will be held on Saturday during the Texas Onion Fest at Weslaco City Park. A modern state of the art kitchen will be built on-site by Lowe’s Home Improvement in Weslaco for the AEP Onion Culinary Center. Both contests will be held in front of a live audience at the event providing more exposure to the competition giving people of all ages the chance to show off their culinary skills and promote the use of onions in today’s hometown kitchens. Participants are required to use a cup of onions in their recipe.

The Salsa Recipe Contest adds a local flare to the event which requires participants to include a cup of jalapenos. Find out if your homemade salsa is an award winning recipe! The contest honors the Mild Jalapeno developed in Weslaco by Dr. Ben Villalon.

Both recipe contests will be held on Saturday, March 27th, at Weslaco City Park in the AEP Onion Culinary Center. Competing age categories include Youth (ages 7–12), Students (ages 13-18), Adult (ages 19 and up), and Professional (restaurants, caf馲squo;s, cooks, etc.). Winners will receive trophies and have their recipes published on the Texas Onion Fest website.

Entry forms are available at www.weslaco.com, and at the Weslaco Area Chamber of Commerce, 301 W. Railroad. Registration deadline is Friday, March 19. For more information, call (956) 968-2102.
