WESLACO, TX – The Onion Fest Culinary Center sponsored by AEP had a last minute cancellation by San Jacinto Culinary College. In their place two outstanding local chefs will conduct demonstrations in the kitchen during the festival.
The Culinary Center, built on site by Weslaco’s Lowe’s store, will have the Interim Food Services Director from STC will demonstrate proper chopping techniques as well as caramelizing recipes for onions. In addition the renowned Chef James Canter of Alhambra’s Restaurant in McAllen will be sharing one of his favorite recipes to the audience. The Culinary Center will also have chefs from local Weslaco restaurants showing off some of your favorite dishes.
The Texas Onion Fest celebrates the development of the world famous Texas 1015 Onion which was developed in Weslaco, Texas, by scientists Texas A&M University Extension Service. The name of the 1015 onion came from the suggested planting date, October 15. The festival brings the community together for a fun filled day of onion eating contests, cooking demonstrations, recipe contests, entertainment and so much more.
