Good Morning Weslaco hosts Gladys Porter Zoo Director

WESLACO, TX - Gladys Porter Zoo Director Dr. Pat Burchfield was the featured speaker at the May Good Morning Weslaco event held at Savory Perks where he spoke about the new additions happening at the zoo.

Burchfield also told the attendees about the Butterfly Exhibit that is open now.  They created an air conditioned area where the cocoons, more formally known as chrysalis, are able to develop and complete metamorphosis. There are more butterflies this year and the exhibit is spectacular than last.

The most notable addition is opening July 10 which will be a South Texas Botanical and Recreation Park located just adjacent to the Butterfly exhibit.  This area will house south Texas native plants and wildlife with a South Texas Discovery Tree with three dimensional embossed animals much like the Tree of Life in Disney World.   There will also be a new education building increasing the zoo’s classroom space by 400%.

The Gladys Porter Zoo has educational programs that see more than 38,000 Rio Grande Valley students with instruction about nature and wildlife conservation and habitats.  The Gladys Porter Zoo is a visitor-oriented zoological and botanical park, dedicated to the preservation of nature through education, conservation and research.
