The Feather Inn Bed and Breakfast Receives Wildlife Habitat Certification
The Feather Inn B & B has been open for two months and has received certification by the National Wildlife Federation as an official Certified Wildlife Habitat. The establishment, located in the historically significant Knapp House, is Weslaco’s first bed and breakfast establishment and is located on 2.5 acres in downtown Weslaco.
The home has recently been restored by owners Cindy and David Willson to its original 1937 splendor when it was designed and built by noted architect Newell Waters for the Knapp family, principal donors to Knapp Medical Hospital. The home was featured in Architectural Digest Magazine in 1940. Recently, guests visiting the new bed and breakfast have come from all over the world, including Canada, Germany, Denmark, as well as all parts of the U.S.
The certification comes after review of application material that shows that the property provides the four basic elements that all wildlife need: food, water, cover and places to raise young; and must employ sustainable gardening practices. “Any habitat enthusiast can create a certified habitat and learn the rewards of gardening for wildlife,” says Cindy Willson. “It’s amazing the variety of birds, butterflies and mammals you can attract by doing a few simple things and minimizing fertilizer and pesticide.”
