Weslaco Chamber Members present Texas Scholar Program to Weslaco ISD Students

A volunteer taskforce committee made up of Weslaco Chamber members dedicated the month of March to preparing the entire population of eighth grade students in the Weslaco Independent School District for high school and the years to come.

The Weslaco Chamber introduced these students to the Texas Scholars Program, an initiative to help students focus on education and prepare them for the workforce. The program works to motivate students to excel and aim beyond minimum standards.

Becoming a Texas Scholar requires hard work and dedication. To graduate high school as a Texas Scholar, students must complete the recommended High School Program or the Distinguished Achievement Program, and complete at least two college credit courses.

“The world these students will live and work in after high school will be much more competitive and we want our students to be prepared,” states Brad Bierstedt, Chair of the Texas Scholars Taskforce Committee. Bierstedt and his team visited B. Garza Middle School, Mary Hoge Middle School, Cuellar Middle School and Central Middle School in Weslaco.

Special thanks to all the Chamber volunteers for making this project possible. For additional information, contact the Weslaco Area Chamber of Commerce at (956) 968-2102.
