Rehab Center at Valley Grande Manor celebrates Occupational Therapy Month

The Valley Rehab Center at Valley Grande Manor in Weslaco hosted an “Open House” event on Friday, April 18, in recognition of Occupational Therapy Month. The event celebrated the success of

their facility which provides inpatient and outpatient therapy services.

Occupational therapy is one of three rehabilitation services offered at the center. “Occupational therapy involves helping a patient develop the activities of daily living, such as taking a shower, opening a door, turning on lights,” says Clarissa Martin, OTR. “Most of our patients have experienced a stroke, had a hip or knees replaced, or have general weakness.”

“We evaluate their progress over time and will take them on outings to test their strength. We have taken our patients to Wal-Mart, Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, and South Padre Island,” says Martin.

After a patient has proven they can function independently, they are recognized during a graduation ceremony. “We graduate patients every Friday, and it’s a fulfilling experience for me to see patients I work with complete their goals,” says Claudia Silva, a senior at STC Nursing & Allied Services, who is studying to be an occupational therapy assistant.
