Hundreds of live Christmas trees will be hauled out of homes this holiday season. The City of Weslaco asks Weslaco residents to drop their trees off at the Weslaco Recycling Center, located at 3101 S. Border, beginning the day after Christmas, Dec. 26.
A designated area will be accessible to the public for delivery. All Christmas trees should have no tinsel and preferably no fake snow on their leaves.
The collected Christmas trees will be dried out and chipped for mulch. Converting trees into mulch diverts them from piling in a Valley landfill. The mulch will be made available to the public after it is complete.
Mulch has several uses including improving the condition of soil, preventing weed growth, and conserving moisture, reducing the need for frequent watering.
Weslaco Beautiful, a volunteer committee of the Weslaco Area Chamber of Commerce, supports efforts to conserve natural resources and commends the City of Weslaco for undertaking this project.
The Weslaco Recycle Center is open Monday thru Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 968-9623.
