Tip of Texas Orchid Society Holds Annual Auction in Weslaco

The Tip of Texas Orchid Society will hold its annual orchid auction in Weslaco on Saturday, March 7 at the Weslaco Area Chamber of Commerce, 301 W. Railroad Street.  This year the event will be open to the public with doors opening at 12:00 p.m. and bidding beginning at 1 p.m.  Admission is free.

Over the past two weeks, exotic orchids from across the United States have been shipped to Society members for safekeeping and for display at a plant exhibit in the Chamber lobby beginning Wednesday, March 4.  The public is invited to view the orchids prior to the auction, then return for the sale on Saturday. Over 100 plants will be offered, many in full bloom, and the event promises to be lively with auctioneer Al Taylor presiding .

“This is our primary fundraiser, and money earned at the auction will be used to finance educational programs for our membership and support orchid research,” says Cindy Willson, TOTOS Vice President.  “This Spring many of our members will be visiting the Houston Orchid Society’s show entitled Orchids, Texas Style, a trip sponsored by the Tip of Texas group.”

With members from all over the Rio Grande Valley, the group meets on the first Sunday of each month at 2 p.m. at the Valley Nature Center in Weslaco.  “We offer information-sharing for all levels of orchid growers, and we are very happy each year to welcome back our strong constituents of Winter Texans who share their experiences growing orchids all over the country,” Willson said.

For more information about the auction and the Tip of Texas Orchid Society, please call Cindy Willson at (772) 486-1020 or go to the Society’s website: www.totos008.com.
