The Weslaco Museum will have its Grand Opening on Saturday, March 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. at its new home at 500 S. Texas Boulevard in downtown Weslaco. It promises to be a gala evening with the Weslaco Chamber of Commerce Redcoats, good food and refreshments.
Museum Board President Benita Valadez announced the event and invites the community to join in the long-awaited opening. She said Executive Director Luis Contreras and others have been working hard to complete the exhibits and the museum’s new facade for the opening event.
“The Museum Board gives special thanks to the many donors, volunteers, and members who have been so generous in their support of the museum and for their patience during its development,” said Valadez. “We hope you will come to the Grand Opening and enjoy the event—and that you will visit the museum often.”
“We gratefully acknowledge the generous support of the City of Weslaco for the operation of the museum and for its assistance with the move to the new location. We also thank the community for its continuing support.”
While its main focus is on area history, the new facility makes it possible to also present art and cultural exhibits and special programs for area citizens and visitors.
A “soft opening” was held last fall after the museum’s artifacts were moved from its former home at 515 S. Kansas. It has been partially open to the public as work continued on the historical exhibits.
