Weslaco Beautiful Seminars Teach Residents, Businesses about Nature

In an effort to educate valley residents about nature, Weslaco Beautiful recently held a seminar series with a variety of topics and presenters on ways to preserve and cultivate our environment.

Paul Crerar of Mid Valley Garden & Pond provided valuable advice on installing and maintaining a water garden. While they are fun and enjoyable, water gardens are not maintenance free and require daily attention. He touched on the importance of nurturing your plants, checking water levels and dechlorinating the water.

Master Gardener Max Ganser and Landscape Architect Cindy Willson presented “Let It Rot & Wormiculture” and explained what gardeners need to know about composting. Ganser gave advice on how to build a compost bin and discussed benefits of organic gardening. Attendees enjoyed 'hands on' demonstrations by Willson who presented the uses of Red Wriggler Worms. These worms produce worm castings that are fertilizer for plants.

Concluding the series was a presentation by Master Gardener Robert Vanderveer on the benefits and beauty of using native plants, large and small, at your home or place of business.
