Landscaping Project Underway Near South Texas College

The Economic Development Corporation of Weslaco is moving forward on an investment project to landscape property near the South Texas College Mid Valley Campus in Weslaco, a project that will enhance the look of the campus and beautify Weslaco.

“South Texas College is very important to the growth of the community. This project is the first phase to beautify the property and make it complement the existing $30 million dollar investment in buildings,” shared Hernan Gonzalez, Executive Director of the Weslaco EDC.

The property, located south of the campus between Border Avenue and Republic, currently belongs to the city but there are plans to transfer the land to South Texas College. The campus sits on the former location of the world renown TexSun Corporation. Due to its agricultural history, trailers were accustomed to parking in the area. Now the Weslaco EDC is helping to relocate these trailers to the Industrial Park.

“We’re adding color to the area and making a difference along Business 83,” says Gonzalez. The project is a continuation of the planting of bugambilias planted by the city, and the development of the Weslaco EDC and Weslaco Chamber buildings at the corner of Business 83 and Texas Blvd. “Investors are interested in the way the city looks, and we want to make a good first impression.”

The project is expected to be completed by the end of June. Plans are to plant 60 Texana sabal palm trees, a minimum $25,000 investment. “We are collaborating with the college as to where the planting will be. Our first challenge will be to clean up the existing caliche and gravel.”
