For Immediate Release:  Frontera Audubon Offers Butterflying 101 A Crash Course in Beginning the Study of Butterflies

It’s butterfly migration time at Frontera Audubon, Weslaco’s premier butterfly viewing spot, and the eupitoriums are alive with clouds of lively creatures, such as the elusive falcate skipper, which has been spotted recently by visitors from Vero Beach, FL.  According to vacationing butterfliers, Mark and Holly Salvato, the skipper “absolutely made our trip to Texas.”  They quickly recorded their sighting  and proceeded to spend six more hours scouting the Frontera Thicket for other species to add to their life lists.  “Although considered somewhat rare by butterfliers, we’ve seen a few here at Frontera recently, and I saw one actually land on a young man’s finger,” says Richard Lehman, Frontera Resident Naturalist.

Newcomers to the butterflying hobby or veterans who want a refresher course with Naturalist Richard Lehman are invited to attend the Oct. 27 program entitled Butterflying 101 to be held at Frontera Audubon, 1101 S. Texas Blvd. in Weslaco and then to join him on a tour through the Thicket and adjoining Butterfly Gardens.  The program will begin at 10a.m. and finish at noon, just in time for brown baggers to enjoy lunch on the grounds.  Refreshments will be available following the program.  Tickets cost $10 and include a daypass to the Frontera grounds and Visitors’ Center .  To make reservations for this program, please call Frontera Audubon at (956) 968-3275.

Frontera Audubon is a nonprofit organization maintaining 15 acres of native habitat in the middle of Weslaco’s urban environment.  Grounds include  a revegetated marshland with boardwalk access, sabal palm forest, native Thicket, citrus orchard, as well as historic home, Visitors’ Center, and meeting room.  Frontera encourages new members to join and volunteers to become involved.
