Weslaco Museum Hosts Progreso Native, Rosa Flores FEB. 5

Progreso native Rosa Flores, now a TV journalist at KHOU-TV, Channel 11 in Houston, will present a program at the Weslaco Museum, 500 S. Texas Boulevard,  on Friday, February 5, at 2 p.m.  The program is free and refreshments will be served.

Rosa will tell of the research and major finds for a book she is writing about the history of her hometown.

“Hundreds of thousands of tourists drive through Progreso to get to Mexico without realizing all of the history along the international border of this region,” she said.

In recent months she has been doing research for the book, including interviews with area historians and with the UTPA collections librarian.

She is looking for historic photographs of Progreso – the railroad, post office, the town, the school, historic ranches, etc.

Rosa graduated from Progreso High School, where she was 1977 Valedictorian and was active in many clubs and UIL events.  She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism, a Bachelor’s in Business Administration, and a Master’s in Accounting from the University of Texas at Austin.

She did an internship with Valley accounting firm of Hales, Bradford and Allen and has been a Certified Public Accountant since 2001.  She worked for a CPA firm before beginning her television career in 2004.

In 2005 she joined KWTV in Oklahoma City and covered breaking news stories around the state from the ground and from the air via helicopter.  Covering weather in tornado alley gave her some tremendous exposure, with her reports appearing on CNN, The Weather Channel, and CBS National Radio.

Since 2007 she has been at KHOU-TV. the CBS affiliate in Houston, where she has contributed news reports at the national, state and local levels.  Presently she covers enterprise, investigative and breaking news stories.

In 2008 Rosa created a motivational talk show for teenage girls and her motivational message has touched the lives of teens in Texas and Oklahoma.  She also started “Corazon a Corazon,” a food drive that has provided thousands of pounds of food for communities along the Texas-Mexico border.

Rosa’s sense of discovery and adventure motivates her to travel and study languages.  She lived in Brazil for a summer and became fluent in Portuguese.  A year later, she spent a month backpacking through Europe, where she explored ten different countries.  Her strong language skills have given her access to under-covered communities in the greater Houston area.

She has received many honors for her work and is a member of a wide range of professional organizations, including the World Affairs Council of Houston and Investigative Reporters and Editors.

The Weslaco Museum is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  General Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for seniors, $1 for students, and free for children under 5.  Phone (956) 968-9142 for more information.
