Donna’s residents plan for the future by planting a tree
Donna, TX – April 30, 2010 is Arbor Day in the Heart of the Valley. Well, we all know that it’s Arbor Day around the world but this marks Donna’s Inaugural year as it proclaims the last Friday of April as Arbor Day in the Heart of the Valley. TXU Energy has donated 30 trees to the city to help in its efforts to revitalize itself.
“TXU Energy is proud to support the City of Donna in its environmental stewardship and continued efforts to become a more sustainable, energy-conscious community,” said Catalina Madrigal-Rupert, manager of community relations, TXU Energy.
The driving force behind this event is Donna’s own Heart of the Valley Committee established by the Donna City Council.
“The committee was established to increase public awareness and participation to help provide a more beautiful, safer and healthier environment for all of its residents and visitors to enjoy,” said Fernando Flores, planning director for the city of Donna.
The committee is made up of 25 residents of Donna and has a chair, vice-chair, secretary, parliamentarian and treasurer.
“The committee is thankful for TXU’s donation of so many trees and helping to beautify the community, we look forward to making this a yearly event,” said committee chairwoman Carolyn Liska, Heart of the Valley Committee.
“The 30 trees we’re donating as part of our partnership with the city’s Heart of the Valley committee will mark the beginning of a greener and more vibrant environment for future generations,” said Madrigal-Rupert.
Arbor Day is an annual observance that celebrates the role of trees in our lives and promotes tree planting and care. It was first observed in 1872 in Nebraska and founded by Julius Sterling Morton from Detroit. Today, National Arbor Day is celebrated on the last Friday in April.
