The Weslaco Museum invites students ages 11-18, and interested adults to “The Flags of Texas Monotype Workshop,” a workshop based on The Flags of Texas, current exhibit by Artist Don Breeden. The workshop is designed to introduce students to a brief history of the seven flags flown over Texas while learning the printmaking medium by creating monotypes of the Texas flags. The 1 day workshop will be held on Saturday, May 15th and then again on Saturday, May 22nd, from 1 pm to 4 pm at 500 S. Texas Blvd. The cost for the workshop is $5 per participant for members and $7 per participant for non-members. Limit of 10 students per session.
Artist Luis Contreras, II will introduce the participants to traditional monotype techniques in printmaking. “Monotypes are a type of printmaking made by drawing or painting on a smooth, non-absorbent surface.” Luis said. “The image is then transferred onto a sheet of paper by pressing the two together, usually using a printing-press. It’s a great opportunity for the participant to create a small historically based piece of artwork.”
Contreras, Executive Director of the Weslaco Museum, received his bachelor’s degree in painting and drawing from the University of Texas-Pan American in 2004, and his master’s degree in printmaking from Ohio State University in 2006. He is also a part-time lecturer in painting, drawing, and design at the University of Texas Pan-American in Edinburg.
