South Texas Lyric Opera bringing Tosca to Valley

Mark your calendars because South Texas Lyric Opera, which is sponsored in part by South Texas College, is bringing Puccini’s Tosca to life in the Rio Grande Valley in May 2008. The curtains are set to go up Tuesday, May 20 and Thursday, May 22 at 8 p.m. at the McAllen Civic Center and Sunday, May 25 at 4 p.m. at the Jacob Brown Memorial Center in Brownsville.

A dark and tragic romance, Tosca highlights brave individuals who rise up against political injustice and struggle with survival in 1800s Europe.

“This show will be our biggest production yet and marks the first time that we are able to bring our troupe to the lower Valley,” said founder and artistic director Dr. Mazias de Oliveira, who is also an instructor at South Texas College. “This is a milestone not only for artistic creation in the Valley, but for our company as we are challenging with bringing this story to life in front of crowds of thousands. I have no doubt that we will outdo ourselves once again!”

South Texas Lyric Opera will also host its Spring Gala Concert to raise funds on Saturday, Mar. 29, 2008 at the McAllen Convention Center. Tickets are on sale now.
