The Weslaco Chamber of Commerce is hosting a candidates’ forum for the upcoming congressional elections to take place on Tuesday, May 29. Candidates for U.S. Congressional Districts 15 and 34, along with Texas House Representative District 39 are scheduled to appear. The forum is scheduled for Tuesday, May 15 at 5:30 p.m. and will be held at the South Texas College Mid Valley campus, 400 N. Border, at 5:30 p.m.
This year, early voting begins on May 14 and runs through May 25. After the 2010 U.S. Census, an increase in the area’s population caused an additional U.S. Congressional District to be added to the Mid-Valley. District 34 now extends west from Cameron County to San Juan and south of Business 83, which means cities in the Mid Valley will have two different individuals representing them in the U.S. Congress.
Candidates will be given two minutes to introduce themselves, one minute to answer questions formulated by chamber members and thirty seconds to answer pre-submitted questions from the audience. Community members are encouraged to participate in the forum beforehand by submitting possible candidate questions to the Weslaco Chamber at chamber@weslaco.com.
The forum will be held in the North Academic Building G Lecture Hall at STC Mid Valley. Seating is limited, and is available on a first come, first serve basis. For more information, please call 956-968-2102.
