HISTORY
The Texas Rio Grande Valley Onion Festival celebrates the development of the world famous Texas 1015 Onion which was developed in Weslaco, Texas, by Dr. Leonard Pike at the Texas A&M University Extension Service. The name of the 1015 onion came from the suggested planting date, October 15. The festival, aka Onion Fest, celebrates 19 years this April and is hosted by the Weslaco Area Chamber of Commerce.
GATE ADMISSION
Festival admission at the gates is $5 for adults; $4 for seniors; and $2 for children. Three entrance gates will be open to festival guests:
Red Gate: located north of the park at Paseo Del Norte and Pike Blvd.
Green Gate: located east of the park near the Tennis Courts off Airport Dr.
Yellow Gate: located south of the park at Utah St.
ADVANCE TICKETS
Save $1 on Adult Admission. Purchase advance tickets at the Weslaco Business Visitors Center located at 301 W. Railroad St. in Weslaco. Discount expires Friday, April 4, at 5 pm.
PARKING
Free parking will be available at the intersection of Paseo Del Norte and Pike Blvd. Guests can enter the festival from the north entrance (red gate).
HANDICAP PARKING
The east side parking lot is designated for guests with handicapped permits. Parking is free and the green gate entrance is located nearby.
INFORMATION BOOTH
Festival information and maps will be available at the Information Booth at Onion Fest. The booth will be selling T-shirts, signing up participants for the Onion Eating Contest at 11 am, and answering your questions.
T-SHIRTS
Purchase Onion Fest T-Shirts for $10 at the Weslaco Business Visitor Center or the Information Booth at Onion Fest. Choose from "We are Weslaco... and We love sweet onions", available in pink, navy, and green, and "Wake Up and Smell the Onions", in navy and green. Shirts are available in Small, Medium, Large, and X-Large. Size XXL priced at $12.
DIRECTIONS
From the West:
Travel west on Expressway 83 towards Weslaco, exit Texas Blvd and drive south; turn left at Pike Blvd, then right at Paseo Del Norte.
From the East:
Travel east on Expressway 83 towards Weslaco, exit Airport Dr and drive south; turn right at Pike Blvd, then left at Paseo Del Norte.
To access handicap parking:
Travel on Expressway 83 towards Weslaco, exit Airport Dr, drive south, and turn right at the park entrance.
ITEMS NOT ALLOWED AT ONION FEST
No outside food or beverages, pets, or weapons.
