Christmas Parade "Rocks" Downtown

WESLACO, TX –Downtown Weslaco lit up Thursday night with thousands of twinkling lights and hundreds of participants with the Mid Valley Lighted Christmas Parade.

The beginning of the week cold rain and wind stormed through Weslaco and Thursday afternoon the skies turned blue and the sun shone through just in time to warm the streets for the parade. Children of all ages were delighted and awed by the colorful floats, marching bands, live bands, drill teams, dancers and horses. Christmas music rang out and carolers serenaded the crowd along Texas Blvd.

The parade theme, “A Rock Band Christmas” gave the participants creative license in creating their floats making it tricky for the judges to choose this years’ winners. The Weslaco Area Chamber of Commerce, staff and volunteers coordinates the event for the city every year. President and CEO of the Weslaco Area Chamber of Commerce, Martha Noell said they try to make each year more exciting and fun for those participating as well as the audience. “We had 104 entrants sign up for the parade. I think people were excited about the theme and all the possibilities it gave the participants to be creative and make this a fun parade,” Noell commented. “The chamber thanks all the parade participants for the time and commitment they put into their floats, costumes and not to mention braving the chilly temperatures”, she added.

The top finishers in the two categories as voted by the judges of the annual parade are as follows:

1st Place in the Float Division was awarded to Vicki Roy Home Health with their Elvis theme. 2nd Place went to Margo Elementary and Knapp Medical Center took 3rd.

Weslaco East won 1st place in the Marching Band division with Weslaco High coming in 2nd place.

For the people who lined the streets from Pike to 6th Street, the parade entertained and warmed their hearts filling them with holiday cheer.
